The Reality of the Democratic Culture Among the members of the Students' Union in the Jordanian Public Universities from the Perspective of Students

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the reality of the democratic culture among the members of Students 'Union in the Jordanian public universities, as well as to identify the differences in the level of democratic culture among the members of students 'Union depending on the (sex, faculty, and academic level) among members of the students' Union. To achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher used the descriptive survey, and developed a questionnaire depending on theoretical literature in this area. The study population consisted of all Union students in the following universities: University of Jordan, Yarmouk University, and the University of Mutah during the academic year 2015/2016. the number was (242) students, and the study sample was the same as study population. The study found that the reality of the democratic culture among the members of the Students 'Union in the Jordanian public universities from the perspective of the students was moderate. The results also showed no statistically significant differences at (0.05 ≥ α) in the level of democratic culture among the members of the Students' Union due to sex, and the presence of statistically significant differences at the level of (0.05≥ α) in the level of democratic culture among the members of the students' Union due to the variables of (Faculty and the academic level). The study recommended the need for training in the practice of democracy, through the establishment of a student debates club, and the emphasis on the role of universities in the rooting of democratic behavior among students, through political socialization and dissemination of culture and democratic values among students and to promote the practice of democracy.
