Abstract

This study tackles “Problems Associated with Novel Classification in the Contemporary Arab Criticism” discourse. It addresses distinct available classification approaches, namely: aim classification, doctrinal classification, substantive classification, procedural classification, compositional classification, chronological classification, and spatial classification. Also, the study aims at clarifying the problems associated with these classifications. One of the most apparent problems is the semi reliant on achievement western criticisms schools, which in their own suffer from inconsistencies and controversies. This dependency made novel classification rather confusing and entangled. Terminology is yet another problem of the Arabic criticism discourse per the findings of this study. This is evident in (a) the controversy surrounding the definitions of various terms due to the differences among the critics and their translation references and (b) multiplicity of terms that refer to the same novelistic classification. The study argues that the aforementioned factors have all contributed to the problems associated with classification in novelistic criticism.

The study concludes by highlighting the necessity for re-evaluating the efforts of critical classification to build an Arabic dictionary for novelist classification. Such a dictionary will unify different classification approaches and define the various novel styles according to their special circumstances.
