Abstract

This paper addresses repetition in the poetry of Haider Mahmoud. The poet uses this style to inspire and instill meaning into the reader. The paper covers four patterns of repetition in the poetry of Haider Mahmoud, namely the repetition of letter, repetition of word (noun or verb), repetition of sentence (complete or incomplete), and repetition of topic. Repetition helps the poet construct the poetic sentence and influence the reader who becomes more respectful of the authority of the poetic text when reading it. In addition, repetition provides the poet with linguistically musical and artistic styles. The paper concludes that repetition is often used in Haider Mahmoud's national poetry. The repetitions of nouns, verbs, complete and incomplete sentences are more common in his poetry than the repetition of letter. Haider Mahmoud also repeated topics especially when he writes about Al Sa'alik (vagrants), Amman, and the Jordan River.
