Abstract

Abstract The study deals with the nature of the relationship between United States and United Nations in the light of the dialectical relationship between multilateral and unilateral approach, and to research the changes in the patterns of the relationship, and stand on the reasons for this changes, as a prelude to a deeper understanding of the role of the United States in international politics, by addressing the most important issues including relationship between United States and United Nations, peacekeeping operations, United Nations reform file, international terrorism, and nuclear proliferation issues. The study will provide analysis to understand the important role of United States particularly during first and second period of president Obama’s administration> The research adopted the following main hypothesis, which is that United States embraces two patterns in its relationship with the United Nations. The patterns are collective and unilateral action, in other words, there is a correlation between the adoption of United States to a strategy of collective action and the extent that this strategy can achieve US interests. In addition to other assumptions associated with the premise of trying to interpret the main hypothesis and prove it. The study proved the hypothesis in a positive way, as well as the other two sub-hypotheses, through the adoption of historical method and the use of the issues and events that confirm this hypothesis in its historical context. The study interpreted the relationship between the functions of United Nations and the role of United States in global policy, including the use of sanctions by the Security Council against Iran and North Korea, and to renew the momentum to stop the spread of nuclear weapons, UN vital help to Afghanistan, Iraq and, revitalize global efforts against international terrorism, and the launch of humanitarian aid of civilians in the conflict zones in general, and other issues.
