Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing and characterizing the Jordanian strategy towards the overall events that are taking place in Syria. This objective addresses the overall international and regional variables that had a significant role in formulating and implementing this strategy. It was clear that the American and the Russian involvement impacts the decision-making process that took into account the harmonization between the Jordanian supreme interests, the security aspects, as well as the mutual relations with all countries of the world. Evidently, the strategy was constructed based on moderation, openness and realism. The Jordanian decision makers have realized the Syrian crisis repercussions in both economic and commercial realms and this was coincided with security concerns and economic consequences, which specifically resulted from the Syrian exodus issue that burdened the Jordanian economy. All these factors together led the Jordanian policy to adopt a sound strategy in dealing with this crisis. This strategy was founded at the highest degrees of pragmatism and rationality, as it clearly defined the political objectives and the national interest’s based on cost and benefits calculations in an attempt to avoid the risks and maximizing the benefits associated with the adopted strategy. Furthermore, the recent developments of events in the region showed that the Jordanian strategy was proved effeicent as it adopted by different palyers either regionally or internationally. Clealy, we find that the recent call of the US elected president Donald Trump to develop safe zones for the Syrian civilians considered a proof of Jordanian strategy success, as this was the Jordanian goal since the beginning of the crisis in order to provide the utmost degree of protection for the defenseless Syrian civilians against the mutual violation of human rights by the disputing parties.
