Case Report: Rhinocerebral Mucormycosis in an Immunocompetent Patient.

Abstract

Rhinocerebral mucormycosis (RCM) is a rare disease, affecting almost exclusively patients with known predisposing conditions such as diabetes mellitus, immunocompromised status, haemochromatosis or major trauma [1]. Until 2011 A total of 212 immunocompetent patients affected with RCM was reported worldwide [2]. In a primary care facility RCM is difficult to diagnose as it often presents in a picture similar to bacterial sinusitis. Herein we report a case of a RCM in an immunocompetent 48 year-old male who was referred to King Abdullah University Hospital (KAUH) in March 2013 from Jordan University of Science and Technology primary health care center (JUST primary health care center) as a case of worsening bacterial sinusitis. KAUH, a tertiary referral center, and JUST primary health care center are a JCIA accredited centers in the north of Jordan.
