Abstract

The study aimed to analyze the bases of neighborhoods’ establishment in Amman city, through studying historical bases related to the ethnic background, origin, and original places where the population migrated from, and the new factors that replaced them. The evolutionary and the descriptive approaches were used in this study to review the factors contributing to the development of the city. In addition, the case study and content analysis methods as well as the narrative approach were also used to understand the determinants of the establishment of Amman's neighborhoods based on the story of the interviewees and their experiences. The study concluded that the end of 1970s and the beginning of 1980's period is a transitional point in the history of Amman city. New neighborhoods in the city were established based on the similar level of economic and social characteristics of population, regardless of the factors of race, common assets of population, or original place of migrants. The new factors that affect housing decision have eliminated the effect of old factors of neighborhoods’ establishment. The results also showed that there is no specific theory that explains the establishment of the neighborhoods in Amman city. The study recommended researchers to study population mobility between the Amman’s neighborhoods and the factors affecting it, and the role of professional housing and private housing in the establishment of neighborhoods and the development of new areas in the city of Amman and other Jordanian cities.
