Youth Employment in Jordan in an Era of Regional Instability: A Multinomial Logistic Model
Abstract
Based on nationally representative micro data from (JLMPS 2016), this study utilizes multinomial logistic regression to examine determinants of the probability of obtaining a job among youth after school. It finds that such probability declines substantially during periods of instability, particularly after the Arab Spring and the Syrian conflict. This pattern applies for both genders, although men youth tend to have been affected more severely. It shows that the share of youth staying inactive or unemployed has increased considerably in the recent years. The results support the well-known important role played by education in labor markets, as more education is found to enhance labor market opportunities. Finally, particularly for those spending longer time looking for work, household wealth tends to play a positive role in finding a job.
