Attitudes of Jordanian Woman towards Some Methods Used for Weight Loss

Abstract

Obesity is considered one of the main causes of death worldwide, where many suffers from this illness due to genetic factors and/or presence of a disorder in body functions, in addition to type of diet and life style. Woman worldwide is highly suffering from obesity, as records of obese women have reached high rates, and yet obesity is stressing her physiologically and psychologically. Women choose several methods to lose weight, which are highly determined by economic, social, psychological and physiological factors. This study was conducted to be introduced to the attitude of Jordanian women towards a collection of weight loss methods. The results revealed that, aesthetic reasons were the strongest motive to lose weight for most of the women in the study with an average of (4.3). Also, the results showed that most Jordanian women have a moderate knowledge about methods of weight loss with an average of (3.3), and most of these women used the internet as a source of information about these methods. Additionally, most women in the study favored diet as a weight loss method with an average of (4.4) followed by exercise, while they limitedly agreed on using drugs to lose weight with an average of (2.0). Also, most women evaluated highly improving media role to show the reality about methods of weight loss as a suggested solution to improve knowledge about methods of weight loss.
