Abstract

Quality dates back to the pre-Islamic age. For example, Al-Mu'alaqqat ‘the greatest Jahili Poems’ were chosen out of the best poems in Arabic poetry. Language skills had a central role in quality where the speaking skill had a high place among them in particular. This research will discuss the contributions and efforts of old Arab scholars and their influence on modern structuralist and transformational-generative grammars. It will also discuss kinds of speaking, its techniques, speech diseases, quality standards, and the idioms which found their way into Western linguistics such as langue and parole, competence and performance, and related issues. In short, the research aims to show the role of ancient Arab scholars in dealing with speaking and their impact on modern linguistics.
