Abstract

This research aims to analyze the movement of Protestant Fundamentalism rises in the United States of America in the early 20 century, who mainly emphasized the literal interpretation of the Bible. Actually, the term Fundamentalism becomes difficult to define and identify because the term has been used to refer to a spectrum that goes all the way from religion to politics. The guiding premise of this research is that Fundamentalism can only be understood as the response of religion to Modernity. More over this research investigate the new self-definition and the new identity that occurs in the protestant fundamentalist movement while facing the challenges of Modernity, and then, the possibility of describing and labeling the movements occurs in other religions and places (such as Islam) as Fundamentalism.
