Abstract

This study focuses on a political speech delivered by His Majesty King Al-Hussein Ibn Talal (King of Jordan) using the text linguistic and communication theory. This study attempts at analyzing the political speech from the perspective of modern linguistics. This will enlighten the political aspects and its domain which have made the language to be its main foundation. Therefore, the language is a primary means of communication with the people and public. It also has strength and ability to establish mutual and immediate understanding, effect, and satisfaction among the people. The study adoptes Discourse Analysis Theory and Communication Theory. The analyses are being carried out in two folds; text and context. The text is an internal speech component which consists of vocabularies, structures, and sentences. On the other hand, the context is divided into two types; linguistic context that connects the internal text component and non-linguistic context which refers to speech analysis using external situations, its direct effects, and usage situations. It also includes characteristics of cognitive, social, and cultural contexts, audience of the event, and the role of speech in relation to the place and time. This study aims at identifying various styles of speech used by His Majesty King Al-Hussein.
