Abstract

This study deals with the social conditions of the city of Ma'an in the first decade 20th century, through what was mentioned in the books of foreign travelers - as a historical source - of important and detailed information about this city during that period, and to achieve the goal of the study represented in identifying the social history of Ma'an and shedding light on its various vocabulary, and because of the scarcity of Arabic studies that dealt with meanings in the first decade of the twentieth century; The information contained in the traveler's books was analyzed and the study was divided into several topics, namely: a brief presentation of the city’s conditions during 19th century, the social and economic impacts of the Hejaz railway station on the city of Ma'an, the names that travelers gave to the city, its population, daily life, and homes Horticulture, water, agriculture, crafts and trade. The study concluded that Ma'an was of great importance during the study period, as it witnessed social activities in various aspects related to the daily life that the city’s residents lived during that period, in addition to the importance of the city’s location on the Sham Hajj Road, which made it a cultural link. And trade between the pilgrims of the Sham on the one hand and the residents of the city and its surrounding areas on the other hand.
