University youth Attitude towards the problem of drug abuse in Jordanian society: Yarmouk students as a case study

Abstract

By conducting a field study using a sample social survey approach was adopted for a number of the Yarmouk University students, whose number reached (1341) students; the study aims to identify the attitude of university youth towards the problem of drug abuse in Jordanian society, using a number of students of Yarmouk University as a case study. It also aims to uncover the level and features of their prevailing knowledge in the interpretation of this problem and their awareness of its seriousness . The study concluded that, in light of the culture of university youth, the most drug-abusing group is the unemployed. The percentage was (52.3%), and the places that drugs were mostly used where; the compound with a rate of (46.8%), followed by cafes with a rate of (27.2%). The most common manifestation of drug abuse is represented in requesting and spending of a lot of money in an unusual manner, and the main reason behind resorting to it refers to the belief that drug abuse eliminates feelings of worries and pain. Meanwhile, bad accompany is considered the main driver behind abuse, causing an immense harm. The most common effect is that it makes the abuser more vulnerable than others to contracting many diseases: physical, psychological and mental, and it is evident that the most appropriate method to reduce the problem of drug use starts from strengthening control over places suspected of abuse and behavioral deviation
