Abstract

This study deals with the concept "water abundance" as it appears in classical literary criticisms. The study attempts to reveal the meaning of this concept, its origin, uses, and synonyms in modern literary criticism. The study concluded that this concept is an illustration of the impressionist criticism in the classical criticism. It is a concept that was derived from the Arab environment in which the critics lived, describing water as something that was a necessity of living for the Arabian man who has since long ago planned to look for water and food. The concept “water abundance” is characterized by some ambiguity and multiplicity of use in the classical criticism. It is synonymous to the concept of “poetic” in modern criticism that is characterized by that ambiguity as well.
