The Role of Election Laws in Representing Political Parties in Jordanian Parliament Councils Following The Democratic Transformation (1989-2016)

Abstract

The present study aimed to identify the elections laws and its reforms implemented in Jordan since the democratic transformation (1989-2016) and to elucidate the role of these laws and its reforms in presenting political parties in elected parliament’s councils up to 2016. Eight electoral councils were elected according to the electoral law and its subsequent reforms which include application of the 1989 an open proportional list (block) electoral system, adoption of the well-known 1993 single non-transferable vote system (one-man one-vote) and the mixed member proportional representation system (Open relative list) 2016. The importance of this study is to analyze the role of electoral laws on the representation of political parties in parliaments.To accomplish study aims; legal approach and system analysis theory of David Easton were used in analysis. This study concluded that election laws and its reforms applied by Jordan especially after 1993 did not increased the representation of political parties in parliamentary councils, despite the reforms
