Abstract

The present article analyzes five novels of young female French-Maghreb authors published between 1987 and 2006: Journal "Nationalité : immigré(e)" " (1987) by Sakinna Boukhedenna, Beur's Story (1990) by Ferrudja Kessas, Ils disent que je suis une beurette (1993) by Soraya Nini, Des poupées et des anges (2004) by Nora Hamdi and Pieds-blancs (2006) by Houda Rouane. The analysis focuses on the identity problems of the young female protagonists torn between their family of Maghrebi origin and French society. The different novels present very different situations: young girls still very dependent on the traditional family, others released from their family, but finding no roots neither in French society nor in Arab culture, others with a true hybrid identity: as well rooted in their culture of origin as in the French republican society
